CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”
-William Butler Yeats

Sweetwater Episcopal Academy consists of grades Pre-K - 5th with 2 classes of each. Pre- K has a maximum of 14 students in each class with no more than 21 students in each class of K - 5th. The low student-teacher ratio along with our challenging curriculum enables the teachers to provide for a high quality academic program. SEA utilizes both a core curriculum and an enrichment curriculum as part of its overall academic curriculum.

CORE CURRICULUM

The focus of Sweetwater Episcopal Academy’s core curriculum is to teach the basic skills in a format to meet the needs of all of our students.

Each classroom teacher varies their teaching strategies to include cooperative learning, hands-on activities, and critical thinking skills. Teachers structure classroom activities to accommodate visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners.

We continue to assess our curriculum to maintain the highest standards in order for our students to be prepared for the academic demands encountered throughout their lifelong educational process.

ENRICHMENT CURRICULUM

The academic curriculum is integrated across the different subject areas with both core academic and enrichment classes. Each enrichment teacher plans their lessons based on the units of study being conducted by each core curriculum teacher at each grade level.

The enrichment curriculum is designed to enhance and highlight subjects of study being taught in each classroom in the areas of physical education, art, creative writing, foreign language, library, religion, and music.  In this way students receive a well-rounded study in each content area.

Enrichment classes, which are part of each student's weekly school curriculum, include the following:

  • Art
  • Creative Writing (2nd through 5th)
  • Computers
  • Library Media Center
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Religion & Chapel
  • Spanish
One additional Enrichment class called "The Wheel" is an opportunity for all fourth and fifth grade students to experience a special class period of Fine Arts Enrichment.  Students who are in Band are scheduled for the entire year.  Students who are not in Band will rotate through a different class each quarter.  Student do not have to choose just one -- they will be assigned to a class approximately each nine weeks.
  • "Art-rageous"
  • Extended Spanish
  • Photography
  • Drama
  • SEA Concert Band
