Third Grader’s at SEA, spent Thursday afternoon participating in the “Greek Olympics” as part of their social studies unit on Ancient Civilizations. Teams Athens, Corinth, Megara and Sparta competed in a variety of events including the Long Jump, Javelin, Shotput, Wrestling and Chariot Races.
The Greeks invented athletic contests and held them in honour of their gods. The most famous games held at Olympia, Southwest of Greece, took place every four years. No women were allowed to watch the games and only Greek nationals could participate. One of the ancient wonders was a statue of Zeus at Olympia, made of gold and ivory by a Greeksculptor Pheidias.
