From Seed to Snack at Sweetwater Episcopal Academy

Kindergarten students light up when they truly understand a concept. The best way to accomplish this is to let the students get their hands dirty! Kindergarten started our plant unit in October. With the help of Mrs. Rudolph’s mom, we planted green beans, lettuce, carrots, and radishes. All plants began as seeds.

Students were amazed to see the growth our garden made from day to day. Finally, in January, the day came where students were able to help pick our yummy vegetables from the garden. Once all ripe veggies were picked, the items were ready to be cooked and prepared. Mrs. Ciullo and Mrs. Rudolph prepared the green beans and radishes for a snack. Veggies never tasted so good!

This unit also came with an important lesson; students learned you cannot control the weather. We lost our lettuce plants due to the extreme cold but were elated to see the green beans and radishes survived.

We are very excited to grow more vegetables in the spring. This time with crops that love the warm spring weather!
